Every institution’s estate consists of physical space. This space costs capital to maintain, with the NAO concluding that “servicing and maintenance of accommodation is the second-largest cost it (HE Estate) has to bear”. Not only are there maintenance costs associated with space, but as a result of inefficient use of this space, opportunities are being missed that lead to further wasting of capital.
A strategic approach to space usage, helps to ensure that at institutions objectives can be built into the estates strategy, optimising space usage to ensure the institution gets the very most out of the space it has available, therefore also getting the most out of the capital invested in the physical estate.
