At Education Space Consultancy, we offer institutions an experienced third-party staff and student consultation service. This service provides our clients with valuable qualitative information that is used to develop and improve the teaching space provision and ensure the estate adapts to the staff and students’ evolving teaching and learning requirements.
How do we deliver our Staff & Student Consultation service?
For this service, we plan and provide separate focus group sessions with staff and students, with the option for staff consultancy only if preferred. Each session is built around our client’s objectives, ensuring that those in attendance understand the project’s goals and crucially also its limitations. All questions are carefully constructed, with discussions maintained within the project’s scope.
Following each session, the client is provided with a written report. This includes detail on the information discussed, feedback received and any common themes that relate to each question. For those projects that include multiple sessions i.e. due to sessions with different departments, both individual and summary reports will be provided, with the latter drawing together the feedback and themes raised within each session.
Why carry out Staff & Student Consultations?
One of the greatest benefits of our consultation service is that we find out how staff want to deliver their teaching and what this means in terms of teaching space requirements, rather than simply what equipment and furniture they want. This information enables our clients to spend estate investment wisely, adapting spaces in order to allow academic staff to deliver teaching the way they want, not just the way they have always been forced to by the existing estate.
Without engaging directly with staff and students, institutions are typically reliant on being told when something is wrong or needed on an emergent or ad-hoc basis. This solely relies on a member of staff contacting the right person, communicating the actual issue and in many cases proposing an ideal solution. This type of process therefore increases the risk that estate investment will be spent ineffectively.
Can you accommodate the staff/student teaching space requests?
An added benefit of this consultation service is that it can also easily be linked with other services we offer. For example, we work with institutions determining their future teaching space requirements based on their predicted demand, via our teaching space and timetable modelling consultancy service.
When all staff and student consultations have been carried out, we can define the type of spaces that the staff/students want and then crucially integrate this information within the data modelling process. This information can then be modelled in order to determine how the future estate can accommodate any new style teaching spaces in the most efficient way. This therefore then provides our clients with a teaching space strategy that they can then use to spend estate investment wisely, creating new spaces that also consider space optimisation.
