T Levels are the new Level 3 qualification to be provided alongside A Levels and Apprenticeships and are to be phased in during 2020, 2021, 2022. In addition to a minimum requirement for students to carry out 315 hours (45 days) of industry placements, T Level students will also receive an equivalent of 3 A Levels worth of UCAS points to progress to university if they wish to do so.
T Levels are set to provide students with:
- An approved technical qualification
- Meaningful work placement with an employer lasting 45-60 days
- English, Maths and Digital Requirements
- Any licence to practice requirements for that occupation
- Enrichment and tutorial time
Furthermore, the latest T Levels Industry Placements guidelines reveal that the student placement hours can be delivered by multiple employers and can be delivered as a whole or in parts. This might be great news for the students and potentially also employers, nonetheless it poses a certain challenge for the college estates and timetabling teams. 50 education institutions across the country have been chosen to deliver the first 3 T Level Routes from September 2020 ranging from sixth forms to technical colleges. The delivery of T Levels from 2021 and 50-75 more providers will released in June 2019. These providers will be phasing in additional qualifications in Construction and Digital but also introducing the Health and Science Route.
In order to provide T Levels £500 million a year has been assigned to finance this extensive project. Additionally, £38 million a year is being invested in the Capital Fund, offering a unique opportunity for colleges to refurbish, upgrade or expand their current estates.
The introduction of T Levels is undeniably an exciting opportunity, bringing in advantages for the FE sector as well as employers, but also challenges that we can help institutions address. Read more about the challenges of Planning Estates for T Levels here.
