Covid-19 Update – A teaching space model is the ideal tool for quickly carrying out scenario testing for the upcoming year. Different teaching delivery proposals can be tested rapidly in order to determine how the estate can accomodate differing demands, or similarly how nescesary changes in the estate (social distancing) will impact on planned teaching delivery.
Our Teaching Space Modelling service provides our clients with a comprehensive data modelling service that accurately determines teaching space requirements given timetable or curriculum demands. In addition this service can test the current or planned estate’s ability to cope with this demand and what utilisation rates can be achieved. Mutliple scanarios can be accomodated within each project, providing our clients with the ability to quickly and accurately test differing demands and availability.
Education Space Consultancy has 6+ years of experience providing our Teaching Space Modelling service, with recent projects including the University of Winchester’s Teaching Space Modelling Project and Birmingham City University’s, Teaching Space Modelling Project. More information on each of these projects can be found below.
Each project is tailored to our clients’ specifications, ensuring that they are provided with a service that accurately models their planned demand and constraints. We can also offer onsite and offsite support in collecting the information and detail required to create each scenario i.e. key stakeholder group meetings.
Typically each Teaching Space Modelling project is presented in the form of a detailed consultancy report that utilises our experience of space management and timetabling within the education sector to provide detailed data analysis, conclusions and action-focused recommendations. Any issues highlighted via the Teaching Space Modelling are explored in detail, with potential solutions then tested and discussed.

London Metropolitan University – Teaching Space Modelling Project – Spring 2020
For this project we worked with the client to determine how teaching space requirements would change given different scenarios. As a result of this project, we provided the client with a series of scenarios that were to be used to inform the University’s strategic decision making for the upcoming academic years.
Sheppard Robson – Teaching Space Modelling Project – Spring 2020
For this project we worked Sheppard Robson, in order to determine a NHS Trust’s space requirements for the target academic year given their predicted timetable demand. We delivered detail on the number, type and capacity spaces ideally required for this target year, with this information used to inform the design process.
Birmingham City University – Teaching Space Modelling Project – Spring 2020
Following the success of the Spring 2019 project for this client, we provided a repeat teaching space modelling service this time determining the teaching space requirements per campus, space type and capacity for the 2020/21 academic year. In addition, we calculated the ideal number, type and capacity spaces required given target timetable frequency rates and how this compared against the planned provision for the 2020/21 academic year. The University’s Estates & Facilities department used this information to plan and deliver changes to the teaching space provision for the target year, ensuring that the estate had adapted to the 2020/21 demand prior to students arriving onto campus.
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) – Teaching Space Modelling Project – Spring 2019
For this project we worked with Bruntwood and Sheppard Robson, in order to determine the Trust’s timetable demand and space requirements for the target academic year. As part of this project we carried out onsite workshops with all academic departments, in order to collect teaching delivery data for the target year given their future demands. We then delivered detail on the number, type and capacity spaces ideally required and then further revised versions that determined how differing space provisions would be utilised given the predicted demand.
Cardiff Metropolitan University – Teaching Space Modelling Project – Spring 2019
For this project we worked with the client to both determine the likely future timetable demand and the future teaching space requirements, for a new academic school. The client used this information to inform the design stage for a city centre construction project, that aimed to facilitate the school upon opening.
Birmingham City University – Teaching Space Modelling Project – Spring 2019
For this project we determined the teaching space requirements per campus, space type and capacity for the 2019/20 academic year. In addition, we calculated the ideal number, type and capacity spaces required given target timetable frequency rates and how this compared against the planned provision for the 2019/20 academic year. The University’s Estates & Facilities department used this information to plan and deliver changes to the teaching space provision for the target year, ensuring that the estate had adapted to the 2019/20 demand prior to students arriving onto campus.
Truro College – Teaching Space Modelling Project – Spring 2019
Given the availability of capital grant funding to support the UK Government’s T-Level ambitions, ESC worked with Truro College in order to determine the College’s teaching space requirements for the future year; abiding by the specific paramters outlines by the funding documentation. The client used this informaton to support their bid for capital funding.
University of Winchester – Teaching Space Modelling Project – Spring 2018
For this project we determined the University estate’s ability to accommodate the predicted timetable demand over the next 3 academic years. This project also detailed and compared the ideal teaching space provision, for all space types, against that planned to be provided in order to highlight where estate efficiencies could be made. This project included key stakeholder meetings with all academic departments, estates & facilities and the central timetabling departments in order to determine both predicted timetable demand and planned teaching space provision over the 3 year period. t.
University of Winchester – Teaching Space Modelling Project – July 2016
For this project we are working closely with the University of Winchester to determine and then model the University’s teaching space requirements over future years, in preparation for the planned construction of a new teaching facility on campus. This is an exciting project that aims to improve upon the teaching facilities already available on campus whilst ensuring that the new facilities are utilised effectively.
Porth and Tonypandy Middle Schools – Curriculum Planning – October 2015
Education Space Consultancy provided a curriculum planning service for Porth and Tonypandy middle schools as part of a multidisciplinary design team, headed by DarntonB3 Architecture. This included developing and providing the project with a detailed curriculum planning report, by conducting onsite meetings as well as onsite and offsite research. This curriculum plan demonstrated the future teaching space requirements for both Porth and Tonypandy middle schools and inform DarntonB3 Architecture’s design process for the planned construction at both sites.
The University of Birmingham – Collaborative Teaching Laboratory Timetabling Project (July 2015)
This exciting project contributed to the effective planning and construction of the new Collaborative Teaching Laboratory facilities for The University of Birmingham STEM students. Education Space Consultancy provided both Timetabling and Space Management Strategy advice as well as Timetabling Models over future years. These services enabled the University to plan to make the most out of the space available as well as provide a teaching and timetabling environment that will benefit its students.
University of South Wales – Teaching Space Modelling Consultancy (March 2015)
For this project ,we worked with the University of South Wales, modelling the timetable and teaching space requirements in preparation for the Atrium 2B construction project, at the Cardiff Atrium site.
Swansea University – Bay Campus – Timetable Modelling Consultancy (Autumn 2014)
For this project, we worked with Swansea University to provide a Timetable and Teaching Space Modelling service that modelled a number of scenarios in preparation for the new Swansea University Bay Campus, that has since been successfully opened and made available to the School of Engineering and the School of Management staff and students.
